Thank you for your response. In the meantime I have worked out my issues. When booting in Safe Mode I kept getting "wrong password". I misunderstood and out of habit I kept entering my 4-digit pin that I usually use. I forgot that there is a difference between login PIN and the password. I had both written down. They are two different things. Networking, or Internet was not needed. I was able to switch back to normal boot mode from there and the computer has been running fine since then.
